TEMFest Returns (The Miami Herald)

Theater artists Sandra and Ernesto Garcia are gearing up for the third edition of their celebration of South Florida’s Spanish-language theater. TEMFest 2012 will feature a free opening ceremony at 7 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Miami-Dade County Black Box Theatre, 2901 W. Flagler St., Miami. Artistic director Eduardo Corbé, actress Marta Velasco and playwright Jose Abreu Felippe will be honored that evening with the Baco Award.

Plays and storytelling events and book presentations featured during the festival are Ernesto Garcia’s Drume negrita at the Teatro en Miami Studio, 2500 SW Eighth St., Miami (8:30 p.m. Oct. 12, 5 p.m. Oct. 14); Una noche de cuentos del Miami cuenta at Teatro en Miami (8:30 p.m. Oct. 13); Raquel Carrio’s Leyenda at Hoy Como Ayer, 2212 SW Eighth St., Miami (8:30 p.m. Oct. 12-13, 5 p.m. Oct. 14); a book presentation on 3 Dramaturgos, 3 Generaciones at Teatro en Miami (7 p.m. Oct. 18); Boris Villar’s No vayas a llorar at Teatro en Miami (8:30 p.m. Oct. 19-20, 5 p.m. Oct. 21); Santiago Serrano’s Dinosaurios at Havana Fama Theatre, 701 SW 10th Ave. (8:30 p.m. Oct. 19-20, 5 p.m. Oct. 21); Enrique Buenaventura’s La orgia at Havana Fama (8:30 p.m. Oct. 26-27, 5 p.m. Oct. 28); Rolando Moreno’s Retrato de Aura at Teatro en Miami (8:30 p.m. Oct. 26-27, 5 p.m. Oct. 28); and a free children’s theater day at 10 a.m. Oct. 28 at Centro Cultural Español, 1400 Biscayne Blvd., Miami; 305-551-7473, teatroenmiami.org.

Young troupe takes on Italian classic (The Miami Herald )

BY ANTONIO ORLANDO RODRIGUEZ Special to The Miami Herald Así es (si así os parece) -- So It Is (If You Think So) -- an ingenious parable about the nature of truth and mankind's curiosity, is among the best-known creations of Italian playwright Luigi Pirandello. Since its 1917 debut in Milan, the play has continued to surprise people from all walks of life because of its confrontational spirit and acute satirical humor. Pirandello based the play on his story Mrs. Frola and Her Son-in-law, Mr. Ponza. A line from that short story summarizes the premise that develops Así es: ``All reality might be but a ghost, or vice versa.'' The new production by Teatro en Miami Studio, in Spanish with English subtitles, boldly approaches this classic, a play that mocks the relativity of appearances, subjective judgments and the pretense of knowing an absolute truth.
